About
Student Ratings of Instruction are formal evaluations completed by students to assess the effectiveness of a course and its instructor. These evaluations take place during the last few weeks of a course and serve several key purposes:
- Provides Feedback for Instructors
- Measures Teaching Effectiveness
- Identifies Areas for Course Improvement
Fresno State Student Ratings of Instruction are now administered online by SmartEvals.
Survey Timeline
- Faculty question selection/opt-out: Approximately the 9th - 15th week of the semester
- Surveys open to students: Last two weeks of the semester (closing at midnight on the last day of finals)
- Reports available to faculty: One week after grades are due
Tentative Fall 2025 Survey Dates
- Faculty question selection/opt-out: October 13, 2025 - November 21, 2025
- Surveys open to students: December 4, 2025 - December 18, 2025
- Reports available to faculty: January 9, 2025

The Student Ratings Committee is a subcommittee of the Academic Senate's Personnel Committee. It's charge to oversee the administration of all student ratings of instruction for faculty at California State University, Fresno. This includes periodically reviewing the bank of questions that faculty can use, monitoring the implementation process, and interfacing with both the student ratings vendor and the university administration on how student ratings are used and setting limits on how they can be used.
